U.S. & Israel Selecting Targets for
Cruise Missile First-Strike Attack
Bruce K. Gagnon,Coordinator,Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space
Multiple
military sources have told the Global Network that Pentagon personnel
responsible for selecting targets for cruise missile first strike
attacks have been sent to Israel.
This indicates that U.S. and Israeli military strategists are now likely meeting to plan a join attack on Syria and/or Iran.
The Persian Gulf war and the 2003 U.S. invasion of
Iraq both began with cruise missile attacks by the U.S. from Naval ships.
It
would be wise to recognize that Bush has decided to expand the current
war and chaos into the entire Middle East region. The implications for
the U.S. and the world will be enormous.
Israel's
recent bombing of Lebanon near the Syrian border indicate that
they are trying to draw a response from Syria. So far Syria has not
responded. The U.S. and Israel will likely continue to
provoke Syria.
Call your members of
Congress and ask them to speak out against a further widening of this
already insane war.
Call for a Cease-fire in the Middle East!
The
complex, incredibly painful, decades-old conflict between Israel, the
Palestinians and Arab countries has proven over and over again that
violence only begets more violence, and the current crisis is the
bitter fruit of that cycle of violence. We will not recount that long
history here, but as an organization that promotes not only peace and
human rights but also international law, we must call attention to
those actions which have threatened thousands of civilians, and thereby
dramatically escalated the conflict.
As the crisis in the Middle East grows, with the continued Israeli military
incursion in the Gaza Strip and escalating, daily attacks between the
Israeli armed forces and Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon, we urge you
take action at this critical time. Peace
Action believes that sovereign nations have the right to protect
themselves, but that right can never be exercised by attacking
civilian infrastructure and populations. An immediate cease-fire is
required to halt the bloodshed, and the United States, which provides
Israel with essential financial backing as well as many of the weapons
being used in the current attacks on civilians and civilian
infrastructure, has both the responsibility and the power to bring a
halt to the current round of violence through pressure on both parties and
persuasion within the international community.

° Write a letter-to-the-Editor: No War on
Iran! Nuclear-Free Zone in the Middle East!
[SAMPLE LETTER]
Instead of threatening Iran with bombing, economic sanctions, or worse,
the US should seize the opportunity provided by Iran’s nuclear
development to renew the call for a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone (NWFZ) in
the Middle East.
At present, South and Southwest Asia (the “Middle East”) are the only
regions of the Global South not part of NWFZs. Nuclear Free Zones have
been extremely effective in addressing and easing regional security
concerns and preventing proliferation.
Surely no region needs these benefits more than the Middle East. The
Bush Administration, with its disrespect for the Nuclear
Non-proliferation Treaty, and on-again, off-again diplomacy toward
Pakistan, India, Israel, Iraq, Iran and North Korea - seems a most
unlikely candidate for vision and positive thinking on this issue.
However, given the mostly bad and dangerous alternatives, pursuit of a
Middle East Nuclear Weapons-Free Zone deserves all the diplomatic skill
and leadership the Bush Administration, the international community,
regional leaders and international civil society can muster.
Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
° Ask your Representative to Co-sponsor Jim
McGovern's Bill to End U.S. Military Operations in Iraq!
Congressman
McGovern (D-MA) has introduced HR4232, which would end funding
for military operations (but not for aid projects and
reconstruction). Call
your Congressman today: ask him to sign on!
° Sign the People's Petition for an Iraq
Peace Process
The question is
no longer whether to end the U.S.
occupation of Iraq,
but how. Peace
Action and Progressive
Democrats of America have identified a workable plan based on five simple steps that our government can
take to end the quagmire.
1. No Permanent Bases
Declare that the U.S.
has no interest in
permanent military bases or controlling Iraqi oil or other resources.
2. Months, Not Years
Set goals for ending the occupation and bringing all
our troops home, in months, not years, beginning with an initial
withdrawal of
troops by the end of this year.
3. U.N.-Monitored Peaceful Reconstruction
Request that the United Nations monitor the
process of military disengagement and de-escalation, and organize a
peaceful
reconstruction effort.
4. Independent Peace Process
Appoint a peace envoy independent of the
occupation authorities to underscore U.S.
commitment to an entirely different mission—a peace process ending the
occupation and returning our soldiers home.
5. Cooperative Political Settlement
Empower the peace envoy to encourage & cooperate
in talks with Iraqi groups opposed to the occupation, including
insurgents, to
explore a political settlement. The settlement must include
representation of
opposition forces and parties, and hold power-sharing and the
protection of
women's rights as core principles of governance and economic and energy
development.
